na010 - sangwon lee - rollyphony

1 - rollyphony

Sangwon Lee’s haunting electronic compositions explore the timbral depth of everyday sounds. Rollyphony was constructed from recordings of rolling coins, marbles, and bottle caps - bent and manipulated to create an expressive language akin to the works of modernist composers Helmut Lachenmann and Chaya Czernowin. The resulting piece presents a unique brand of polyphony, a multi-layered sound that transforms simple sources into densely woven textures.

Born in Korea, Sangwon Lee has won numerous international awards including EACA International Composition Competition (Japan), JURGENSON International Composition Competition (Russia), Frederic Mompou International Award (Spain), and Destellos International Composition Competition 2016 (Argentina). His works have been performed and broadcasted in Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Belgium, Brazil, U.S. and South Korea. He has been a presenting composer for 2016 Contemporanea Nuova Musica in Udine (Italy), MUSLAB 2016 International Festival of Electro acoustic Music, and the Society of Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) 2017 National Conference. Lee holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Keimyung University and received his Master of Music degree from New England Conservatory.
